This open cluster is around one billion years old and is 2500 lightyears distant.
NGC 6940 is rich in red giants. The brightest star in the cluster is FG Vulpeculae in the centre of the image, and is one such.
The blue giant stars surrounding the cluster in the image are too young to be part of it, but frame it attractively.
This image is the result of 2 hours of RGB data capture from Horsham, over 4 evenings in July and August 2024. A ZWO ASI2600MM Pro camera was used, through an 8-inch Teleskop-Service Ritchey-Chretien reflector.
