This open star cluster is one of the nearest to us, at around 486 lightyears. It is the third-brightest open cluster in the sky, being outshone only by the Pleiades and Hyades. It consists of around 75 stars.
The smaller star cluster to the left at around 8 o’clock, is Melotte 101. It is much more distant than IC 2602, at around 6,800 lightyears.
